Welcome
My name is Jim Sheedy and I am a website developer and technical
writer with over 20 years of professional experience. My specialty
is designing and implementing dynamic Web sites for academic
organizations and small businesses. I can also teach onsite writing
workshops in technical writing.
Dynamic Web Pages
I primarily work with the OpenSource database MySQL, but I can also work with Microsoft Access or
SQLite. I would be happy to do the following for your organization:
- Design a database schema and dynamic web pages that can update and report on the data stored in the
database.
- Design and implement online forms. For example, set up online registration forms for website
users, and internal forms that staff can use to insert form information into an existing
database.
- Access the data through Web pages that contain PHP or ASP scripting code. When appropriate, I can
access the data asynchronously using Ajax and JavaScript for a more seamless user experience.
Writing Training
For over 10 years, I have been teaching technical and business writing for Duke University's
Office of Continuing Studies and for the North Carolina Writers' Network. I offer the following
training services:
- Onsite writing workshops. Topics include writing software documentation,
procedural guides, reports, and proposals.
- A workshop on writing skills for work-related writing (I teach this workshop
through the Center for Business and Technical Writing,
a program of the North Carolina Writers' Network). The course covers the fundamentals
of effective communication: conciseness, word choice, grammar, punctuation, sentence and
paragraph structure, and more.
